The Birth of a Community Staple

Adapting to Change in Uncertain Times

When the pandemic hit, brick-and-mortar retail came to a standstill, leaving design businesses like Closed Sundays facing unprecedented challenges. Amidst the crisis planning, downsizing, and initial uncertainty, Founder Chris Clewes saw an opportunity—one that would take him in an unexpected direction.

A Bold Leap into Specialty Coffee

Recognising a gap in the grab-and-go coffee scene in his local area of Mid-Wales, Chris set out to create something unique. His research led him to Coal Town Coffee, a Welsh roastery rooted in mining heritage, serving some of the best coffee he had tasted since moving to the area in 2018. After connecting with Coal Town’s founder, Scott James, Chris received expert guidance on equipment, training, and best practices. Pairing this knowledge with his design expertise, he sourced a 1964 Citroën H Van and worked with professional catering van converters and signwriters to ensure it looked as good as the coffee it would serve.

A Community Hub on Wheels

The van quickly became a local favourite, gaining recognition for its exceptional coffee and welcoming atmosphere. More than just a coffee stop, it became a place for conversation and connection during an isolating time.

A Full-Circle Moment

Just six months later, as Closed Sundays began to recover, Coal Town Coffee made an offer to purchase the van—a testament to its success and impact. The journey came full circle, proving that adaptability and creativity can thrive in the face of adversity.

The van even caught the eye of La Marzocco UK, earning a feature on their social media platform.
